The "Daily 5" is a system for Reading that helps students develop daily habits of reading, writing, and working independently. There are five choices for students to choose from as described below.
Read to someone During Read to Someone, students will have to opportunity to read to a classmate. Students will learn appropriate ways to sit with their partner (EEKK - Elbow to Elbow, Knee to Knee,) how to choose a book and share it, and how to take turns reading. This choice gives the students a way of hearing text read by others close to their reading levels, while helping each other with the reading strategies and fluency.

During this choice, students will work to build their vocabulary and listen to good models using fluency, accuracy, and expression.

word work During Word Work, students will work with spelling words, vocabulary words, or groups of words that share a common pattern. There is a variety of things to do during Word Work. Students may choose any of the available options, ranging from whiteboards and magnet letters to wikki stix and stamps.

what does the daily 5 look
like in my classroom?
Once we have taught each of the five Daily 5 choices and have built up enough stamina, we will begin 20 minute rotations. In between these rotations, we will have short 7-10 minute mini-lessons. We will do 2-3 rotations each day.

building stamina
Students will begin building stamina on Day 1 of the school year. We will work our way up to 20 minute rotations without interruption and distractions. This is not an easy task and will take some time and practice. Check back often to see how we are doing!
