The 40 Book Challenge
Are you up for the challenge???
I am challenging your child to read 40 books by the end of the school year. I know they can do it!!
Students will have Daily 5 time in class to read their books. They are also expected to read each night for 20 minutes. While I know that reading 40 books is a big expectation, this goal can be reached easily if students are reading every day in class and at home.
WHY ARE WE TAKING THE 40 BOOK CHALLENGE?
The purpose of the Challenge is to get students reading different types of books and to instill of love for reading. Students will choose what they read, which will help them stay interested and focused. Research has proven that reading voraciously from a variety of genres is the best way to improve ourselves as readers.
HOW DOES THE 40 BOOK CHALLENGE WORK?
Students will choose a genre on their charts. They will then choose a book that fits into that genre and read it. Once the book is completely read, the student may shade in the square for that genre and then blog about it on our classroom website.
WHICH BOOKS CAN WE READ?
The books students read will be their choice. In class, I will help students pick "Good Fit Books." I want students to stretch themselves as readers, but books should not be so hard for them that they struggle to understand or enjoy reading. Books may be from the school library, classroom library, public library, or from home.
WHAT SHOULD WE DO WHEN WE FINISH A BOOK?
Write down the title of the book on your 40 Book Challenge Chart. Be sure to spell the title correctly and to place it under the correct genre (Ask if you need help with this.) Then, go to the 40 Book Challenge Blog and write a summary and opinion of your book.
